Babo Botanicals Clear Zinc Sunscreen

We were admittedly very excited when we heard about Babo Botanicals’ Clear Zinc Sunscreen with no nano particles. We also admit we were skeptical. But this product has surpassed any of our expectations of what a good sunscreen should be. Not only is is effective against sunburn (30 SPF) but it is completely natural and safe for children. The formula goes on clear, so no worries about the white mask effect from most zinc sunscreens. Aided by the addition of organic oils, it absorbs quickly and soothes the skin … and it even has a pleasant scent. Another plus? Babo Botanicals zinc sunscreen is not greasy at all! This may just be the perfect sunscreen on the market … at least we will tout it as so!

The Happy Trunk

In the ever-expanding world of monthly box delivery services, Happy Trunk stands out as unique and oh-so creatively refreshing! Imagine: a box full of open-ended, fun crafts and activities delivered to your door every month – what an exciting idea for children! Our sample was a Wild West themed Happy Trunk, filled with fun projects like panning for gold, designing your own bandana and a cowboy/girl race to your horses game.  All the materials and instructions needed are included in the box. We were pleasantly surprised at how creative and hands-on these projects are – instead of supplying the child with pre-made “gold” nuggets for the gold panning project, children are instructed to make their own gold from clay and gold glitter. We highly recommend this fun service!

The Mountain Eco-Friendly T-Shirts

We fell in love with The Mountain’s Big Face t-shirts at first glance. What child wouldn’t love to don one of these adorable, realistic animal shirts that is a guaranteed conversation starter? The variety of animal faces they offer seems endless so every child’s taste is covered. Aside from creating unique designs, The Mountain is America’s greenest t-shirt company. From their use of organic reactive dyes and waterbased inks to their Oeko-Tex 100 Certification (no toxic chemicals!) to their very low carbon footprint (shipped from, dyed and printed in the U.S!), The Mountain is committed to making a great, sustainable product. (And did we mention they have adult t-shirts as well? Fun!)

We love Teres Kids! Made from 100% organic cotton, this clothing line is dedicated to comfort, and it shows! Tag-free with soft seams, Teres Kids knows how to make a child cozy, comfortable and happy. Ideal for sensitive kids who dislike the scratchiness of sharp edges and rough tags, these itch-free clothes are a windfall! Sprout Eco-Friendly Watches

We were excited to find out about Sprout Watches. Little did we know that an eco-friendly timepiece actually exists! Sprout creates styles to fit every member of the family -- from elegant to sporty to whimsical – yet their appeal doesn’t stop there. We felt good wearing this watch knowing that the determined men and women who created it went to great lengths to find the most natural materials and practiced low-impact manufacturing. And did we mention the variety of earth-friendly and socially-responsible style choices Sprout offers? From bands made with organic cotton, corn resin and recyclable Tyvek to watch faces made with conflict-free diamonds, bamboo, cork and Mother of Pearl to mineral crystal lenses and mercury-free batteries, Sprout has the eco-friendly spectrum covered! And, of course, it must be said that we were impressed by the comfort and durability of these watches. Sprout also gives a percentage of their profits to 1% for the Planet, Riverkeeper and Trees for the Future.

Underdoodles

You readers already know that organic cotton undies are the way to go. You probably also know that kids love cute underpants! Our daughter loves to show her bootie to us each morning and by showing us the cutie-patootie underpants she’s sporting for the day.

Oh yeah, and while she might kill me for saying this, she’s always getting “wedgies” cuz she’s so physically active and many of her undies are thin with edging that bothers her when she moves around.

Underdoodles organic cotton briefs are thick and wide creating a “wedgie-free” wild woman outta my kid! Made in Canada, Underdoodles are made for boys and girls with dinosaurs, planets, musical instruments, and under-the-sea designs. But honestly, my favorite part is that they come in super cute camping, travel or sleepover bags, which are sewn closed down the middle and on either side it states, “DIRTY,” or “CLEAN.”

Kicky Pants Clothing

One of our long-time favorite lines of clothing, Kicky Pants never ceases to make us happy! Their soft and sustainable, cozy and comfortable styles are like home in a world of children’s clothing that is over-processed and filled with busy character prints. Made from eco-friendly and sustainable bamboo fabric, Kicky Pants clothing is breathable and delicate even on baby’s skin. Bamboo is perfect for any season, helping to keep your child warm in winter and cool in summer. We are especially impressed at how warm and snuggly our 5-year-old felt wearing her bamboo jammies in the middle of a frigid winter. An added bonus is that your child won’t be inundated with all those yucky chemicals found in most clothing and sleepwear.

Jaq Jaq Bird Travel Butterstix Chalk and Roll-Up Chalk Mat

We never thought of chalk as a luxurious item, that is, not until we checked out Butterstix from Jaq Jaq Bird. These are hands-down the softest, smoothest sticks of wonderment we have ever drawn with! And our little testers agree. No complaints of breakage, skipping or dust flying in noses– just pure, creamy, creative delight! Matched with Jaq Jaq Bird’s Travel Chalk Mat (which, by the way, doubles as a placemat), your children will have tons of fun expressing the artist within. Just wipe the mat with a damp cloth and your child’s canvas is ready to be blessed with more buttery-chalk goodness. Oh, and we can’t forget to mention that these products are non-toxic and PVC-, BPA- and phthalate-free.

Hatley PVC Free Rain Boots & Raincoat

During the wet seasons, leaving my house is always a bit of a struggle. While puddle jumping sounds FANTASTIC, the jacket wearing seems to be a major problem for my kids. It seems getting kids to wear jackets is a bit of universal situation according to my friends who all have a similar issue with their 4- 7-year olds. It’s like kids are amphibious … warm blooded and shedding their outer layers as soon as the opportunity arrives.

Hatley is a 20ish-year-old, family-run company that focuses their environmental efforts on making PVC-free products that are made to last. Many of their designs feel east coast and wealthy… like a yachting crew might sport them! And they also have adorable raincoats and rain boots in kid-friendly designs (dinosaurs, ladybugs, etc.) that make them a closet-must-have for leaf stompers, mud enthusiasts and earthworm finders of all sizes.

Totem Animals by Kidsonroof

Engineering, color coordination, anatomy, teamwork, dexterity… these are just some of the skills your kids will utilize and practice while building these lightweight artsy toys. From Dutch creation, these animals are made by popping-out the recycled cardboard pieces and joining them together to build a deer, spider, horse, butterfly, and many other nature creations.

The pieces tend to fall away from one another, and, if the instructions disappear, it’s very hard to figure out which spider joint goes to which leg! So, if your kids want to play with what they’ve built you might consider a non-toxic glue to set the joints together for a sturdier construct.

Yoga Pretzel Cards

When I first used these cards, I was teaching yoga and movement class at a preschool. This large deck of illustrated yoga pose cards helped me in so many ways! The kids loved the drawings and had so much fun with the poses (such as gorilla and elephant) and their illustrations on the cards.

Created by Yoga Ed., these cards show people of any age yoga moves that incorporate partner poses, balance poses, forward and backward bending poses. (Incidentally they are a wonderful way to occupy the baby of the house! Hours have been spent taking the cards out, and putting them back in the box they came in! Zen breathing exercise without trying!)

Eco Ditty Reusable Snack Bags

There are quite a few reusable snack and sandwich bags cropping up on the market these days but Eco Ditty are definitely among our favorites! What makes these bags stand out is the fact that they use 100% organic, fair trade cotton with low-impact dyes and inks and are equipped with a hook-and-loop enclosure, allowing you to vary the size of your bag. Plus, they are quite durable, with an un-dyed organic cotton liner while the fold-over flap eliminates spills. We are confident when carrying around our snacks in Eco Ditty bags – we haven’t had a spill yet! And at the end of the day we can just toss it in the dishwasher (yes, the dishwasher!), happily saying goodbye to plastic lunch containers for good.

Vintage Puzzles from The Rusty Chicken

Etsy.com has many shops that sell vintage children’s toys and games. The Rusty Chicken is one of these shops and they have several Playskool wooden puzzles that are nostalgic for parents and easy to play for kids.

These vintage puzzles are made of wood and they are without plastic handles on each piece... which might be a great way to help your little ones use there fingers in different ways. The available stock at present includes Little Jack Horner, Old King Cole, Jack in the Box and Kitty Cat puzzles. They also have a 1970s Super Simon game and a 1960s Scribbage board game… those might be gone soon if my husband has anything to do with it!

Little Duck Organics Tiny Fruits

What can we say about Tiny Fruits that hasn’t been said before about children’s freeze-dried fruit snacks? A lot! These are a hit in our house. Not only are they seriously delicious (this is coming from the pickiest eater in the house!) but they are made with 100% organic fruit, plus they're gluten free and non-gmo certified. We had a hard time resisting the flavor combinations -- unique and tasty. Our favorite is the mouth-watering strawberry-mango, but all are yummy! We also love that Little Duck is a member of 1% for Humanity, donating at least 1% of their annual gross income to humanitarian nonprofits.

EcoGear Panda Backpack

An eco-friendly bag without environmental baggage… that’s their tagline! We at Bamboo just love this idea… and it is the cutest panda backpack EVER! My daughter proudly wore it to her first day of school and I’m certain hers was the only one made without PCV, made from recycled materials, organic cotton and toxin-free dyes! They are able to avoid treating their products with PVC because they are using a new technology called EPO. To quote their website this “EPO (Environment Pollution Omitting) technology is a safe alternative to the use of PVC, the complex technology of thermoplastic elastomer - the versatile and non-polluting raw material.” A major win-win and it even burns clean when it’s time to be recycled.
