Sitz Baths: Herbal Tea for Your Lady Parts!

A few years ago, I had not heard of a sitz bath until my midwife gave me some yummy herbs, told me to brew them up, and sit in them. I had received many stitches following the birth of my babe, and I was open to any suggestions! So I did, and it was like heaven. So let me share with you, dear readers, in case you do not have an herb-bearing angel of your own!

A postpartum sitz bath is basically a warm tea of herbs and salt that you soak your bottom in post labor. It helps to ease swollen, stretched muscles and tissues, and soothe and heal if you had a tear or an episiotomy.

You can use your own bathtub with just enough water to cover your hip bones, a shallow tub you can sit in, or an actual basin made especially (called a portable sitz bath) that fits over the toilet. It is safe as early as one hour after birth!

Happily, there are some great concoctions out there. Here are a few:

*Earth Mama Angel Baby’s Post Partum Bath Herbs come in easy to use, individual herbal pads that can be iced to comfort your achy nether regions, or used steeped into a warm bath.

*The Sitz-ing Pretty tea from The Spoiled Mama is a loose blend that comes with two reusable muslin bags that, in place of a bath, can be used directly on the perineum area either warm or frozen.

*Motherlove has three great products just for this! The straight up Sitz Bath herbs to steep and strain into a bath or tub, the Sitz Bath Concentrate lets you skip the boiling and steeping, and just mix into warm water, and their Sitz Bath Spray that you spray on sore, swollen perineal muscles if you don’t have the time or energy for a bath. (I say, take them while you can, Mamas!) Great to keep handy!

If you happen to be the DIY type, have lots of herbs lying around begging to be used, or want a great gift for a new Mama, try this recipe from Family Herbal Remedies:

2 oz. of rosemary and uva ursi,

1 oz. each of chamomile, chickweed, marshmallow root, plantain, lavender flowers, and calendula, and then 2 oz. of sea salt.

Pour boiling water over four ounces of your herbal sitz bath blend.

Let it sit and steep for at least four hours.

Strain it into a bowl, or directly into your basin and then sit in the tea for about 15 minutes.

Repeat several times a day if you do not have stitches. If you do have pesky stitches, keep it to once a day.

If making your own for yourself or gifts, you can get all of these herbs online at Mountain Rose Herbs, as well as muslin bags.

Happy steeping!
